Richard H. Lineback, Ph.D. , Founder & President
Richard H. Lineback founded The Philosopher’s Index in 1966 and subsequently established the Philosopher’s Information Center in 1967. In 1970, he founded the Philosophy Documentation Center. As director of both centers, he served as editor to The Philosopher’s Index, coeditor of the International Directory of Philosophy and Philosophers, assistant editor of the Directory of American Philosophers and general editor of the series, Bibliographies of Famous Philosophers. After 40 years, Lineback still serves as president of the Philosopher’s Information Center and as editor of The Philosopher’s Index.
Dr. Lineback graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1958 with a B.A. in philosophy. In 1963, he received his Ph.D. from Indiana University. As a professor of philosophy specializing in bioethics, he has taught at both Bowling Green State University and the Medical College Ohio.
Dr. Lineback is notable for his broad range of academic interests that, in addition to philosophy, include computer science and information science. His expertise in these three disciplines led him to found The Philosopher’s Index and to later serve as a computer consultant to the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Kennedy Center for Bioethics, among numerous other national organizations. He has served as president of the Association of Philosophy Journal Editors and as president of the National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS). He has had the added honor of being a delegate to the White House Conference on Library and Information Sciences and is currently an honorary fellow for NFAIS.
